Festival 2011

Welcome to Cinémental! This year, we are celebrating our 20th anniversary. What a wonderful age to be! And it's all thanks to you! We are grateful to you, and proudly so, for encouraging cinema from here and abroad. Thank you for joining us in acknowledging talents of our film artisans and the remarkable quality of our French-language productions.

Cinémental is rolling out the red carpet for you. It will be an exciting festival! Come and view the best French-language films of the year, with English subtitles. Enjoy!

Manitoba Night

At the Centre culturel franco-manitobain Wednesday, October 19, at 7 p.m., Cinémental presents an outstanding evening of Manitoba films.

2011 is the year for anniversaries: 20 years for Cinémental, 15 years for Productions Rivard, and 75 years for CBC/Radio-Canada.

The line-up:

  • Pascal Boutroy's L'Aventure française – la famille Dumont, a documentary by Productions Rivard;
  • Manitoban Matthew Rankin's fictional Tabula Rasa;
  • two Manitoba-made clips from the Web clip series called Où tu vas toi? by Caroline Monnet and Sébastien Aubin;
  • segments from the upcoming season of the Radio-Canada variety show Pour un soir seulement to be aired in January;
  • and two video clips by Franco-Manitoban artists—Alphabête by Daniel Roa and Comme la route by Marijosée.

A brief performance will follow as well as a question-and-answer period with artists in the field.

African Night

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, Cinémental will highlight the cultural contributions of French-speaking countries in Africa.

  • Le mec idéal, a comedy by director Owell Brown from Ivory Coast, will be presented.
  • The Congolese band Exile.z will perform before the screening.

There will also be an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Cameroon artists Henriette and Nelson Brian Mutima. Some clothing from Mali will also be shown. And delicacies from Senegal will be served. What better way to appreciate the richness of this great continent.

Short Film Competition

Don't miss the unique, and free, double bill Saturday, October 22 at 1 p.m. in the salle Antoine-Gaborieau of the CCFM. First the short film competition with 12 entries, including Manitoba-made productions in both amateur and professional categories. This will be followed by a feature-length presentation (with English subtitles) by director Dany Papineau, 2 Frogs dans l'Ouest. Be there!

People Choice Award

The most popular feature movie will receive the Gerbe d'or award. To vote, deposit your ticket stub in the appropriate box (1 to 4 stars, 4 being the best) following each movie. As for the short film competition, the winner of the Épi d'or award will be determined by audience members' ballot sheets distributed at the screening at the CCFM.

Expo 2011 - 20 Years Old

Cinémental is Western Canada's oldest festival dedicated to French-language films and is one of the longest-lived in the country. In order to underscore this event, the CCFM is hosting a special exhibition from October 19 to November 25. Cinémental 2011– 20 Years Old looks back on the past 20 years, a fascinating stroll through time in pictures and words. The posters, anecdotes and film clips will amaze and amuse you. Do not miss this! At the Centre culturel franco-manitobain art gallery located at 340 Provencher Boulevard.
